Music Program

Learning through music.

Our song contest has been developed  to create songs by kids and/or for kids to communicate through music and for music to  inspire kids in new ways and help you prepare for your future.

Let's use the love of music with  kids and develop songs that have positive messages that are relevant to kids.  We can also use this project to engage future songwriters and give kids an interesting and relevant learning experience to work on. Once we have the songs developed, there are so many additional "experience opportunities" for kids to develop music for the song, perform and record it.

We have developed a "contest" to help get this project started.   You can also participate in developing  songs  without competing.  We realize that competition is not necessary for all kids but it helps some kids get involved.

We encourage you  to work with other kids as a team.  You will find that as a team, you will discover that a variety of talent will help you develop your song or some lyrics.  You can even discuss this idea with your school music teacher as a possible class project or with youth service group you participate with.

Some kids may prefer to work with the tune from one of their favorite songs. This way you don't have to create a new tune or worry about music and it sounds great right from the start!  If you want to put music to your song but don't play an instrument, then try "junk" music . This is music that you create by using anything around the house, for example a broom handle, the ting of a glass or a pot.

There are a number of ways to participate.  You can e-mail a little or lot, a verse, a chorus, a full lyrics or music. You can record a song and send us a tape, video or CD.  We just want you to give it a try and do what you can.

Depending on the response we receive to this contest , there are a number of things we plan to do.  We will try to get radio stations to play the songs, we will try and work with recording studios to help kids record the song in a studio (prize for competing) , we will contact record labels to investigate distribution of the songs and we will contact songwriters and artists to engage them to help in this project.  Like anything in business, when there is an interest there are many opportunities.

Give it some thought and let's make our song project something great!

  Rules and information:

  • All styles of music are eligible.

  • Each song must be the contestant's original work. Entrants and their collaborators will retain full rights to all work submitted for the competition.  If your song is used in a commercial way (sold) then you will be paid.

  • Songs will be reviewed by a committee consisting of kids, TeachingKidsBusiness.com management and music industry people.   We will try and post songs on our site to have kids view the songs and/or listen to them and possible vote.  This is not about the best song but it is about the message that the song communicates.

  • Judges will use five criteria: melody, form, originality, lyrics (when applicable), and presentation.

  • Contest is open to kids 9-14.   Assistance is encouraged from parents, teachers, advisors and professional songwriters and artists.  No song previously recorded and released through major national distribution in any country will be eligible.

  • Winners will be notified by e-mail, and winner’s names will also be posted on our website.  We are not as focused on winners as acknowledging excellent  effort and the contributions to helping kids understand business and prepare for careers.
